Highgate Gives Sadly we have many people in our borough, living only a few miles from our doorsteps here in Highgate, who are suffering great hardship during the Covid-19 crisis. The pressure on foodbanks is increasing weekly and community organisations are overwhelmed with requests for help. We would like to support the incredible work of these local organisations by partnering with Haringey Giving to set up a dedicated Highgate fundraiser to get funding to where it is needed most. Haringey Giving is an independent local organisation set up in response to the crisis and is supporting 23 local community projects across the borough and has already awarded over £200k in grants. From projects that provide a haven for the homeless and those that support the most vulnerable elderly and socially isolated refugees, to projects that provide counselling to young adults and families, and local food banks that feed families in very low income communities that have been hardest hit by this crisis – these grants are making a huge difference to thousands of lives in Haringey. However more funds are urgently needed as the pandemic continues to seriously impact the lives of those young and old in our borough. We are therefore asking Highgate residents if they will help their neighbours by either setting up a regular donation or by making a one off donation. You can set up a regular payment when you make a donation. Below are just some of the inspiring projects that Haringey Giving is supporting. Please give what you can. Oh, and that your social worker will need to go into self-isolation. This is the new reality for some of Haringey’s most disenfranchised girls and young women – many, victims of abuse who’ve transitioned out of the care system. Helping them not just in their hour of need, but for the long haul, is Sister System–a grassroots community-based organisation. read more about Sister System Homeless and frightened: The charity helping those who have no home to quarantine in Where do the homeless go during a pandemic? Well, it’s a more complicated question to answer than you may think. Social distancing measures mean that people cannot stay in public space like they might usually, and while the government has launched initiatives to temporarily house the homeless, some people have taken longer to house than others, while some simply don’t fit the bill. All People All Places is a Tottenham-based charity that’s working hard to home those who’ve slipped through the cracks. read more about All People All Places The Royal seal of approval: CARIS Haringey gets a nod from the Queen Arising from the gloom of the pandemic is a good news story from one Haringey Giving’s grant recipients, CARIS Haringey. The Tottenham-based charity, which works with homeless families across the Haringey borough, has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. read more about CARIS Haringey Joining the Zoom Generation One of the biggest impacts of Covid 19 and lockdown has been on the older generation. People who had been active mingling with their peers at social or community events were suddenly thrown into pure isolation. Rapid changes were forced on people and technologies new to many sprang up and became something we all had to learn quickly how to use to stay connected. A Haringey Giving grant recipient, Generation Exchange, a local charity based in Haringey and Enfield, was able to refocus their support quickly for older people. read more about Generation Exchange I want to make a donation I want to set up a fundraiser
